Overview

For many us, the Internet exists as little else than the ultimate procrastination tool. But in between fragmented sentences of term papers, when even games become a chore, Alter Ego never fails. Alter Ego offers an abstract description on its homepage: “an online life simulation browser game. (It’s hard to explain)”. Apparently available for both iPhone and Android devices, Alter Ego is in reality, not that difficult to explain. Upon beginning a game, you (the player) are greeted with the photo of a developed fetus accompanied by the news “the game begins not long before your first birthday”. Once you choose your sex, you are presented with hundreds of subsequent choices (including actually being born). Without much information of what is to come, you are given a brief description of your family, you define your personality, and then you begin infancy. By clicking on a series of icons, you get to choose how to “act” in a variety of circumstances before advancing through childhood, early adulthood, adulthood, and old age. Mimicking the general patterns of typical American existence, Alter Ego takes the player through a lifetime relationships, education, recreation and employment. Although the game always ends with the death of the player, the time and manner of that death is a result of choices made. Unfortunately, this means the game can end at any time, and you probably should not accept the candy bar from that stranger in a windowless van.
